Thanks to everyone who made it a great weekend! I lovelovelove you all so much and am so grateful for all the love and support. Sure makes living with an incurable curse way more bearable and it’s definitely not lost on me that it’s because of all of you!

Well, folks. I’ve told some, but it’s finally official. After a month & a half of x-rays, MRI’s, PET scans, and a brutal bone biopsy I’ve been diagnosed with cancer for a second time. That’s what makes this incurable. I’ll keep getting it and getting rid of it for the rest of my life (however long that is) all while dealing with the residual in between. Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow & blood cancer. The plasma cells in my bone marrow become cancer cells & start replacing the healthy blood cells. It leads to bone & marrow decay, fractures, & bone collapse. Pretty painful stuff. What I find odd is that it’s back after 4 years almost exactly to the day. 11 days apart, to be exact. I’ll be in treatment for the foreseeable future, but I’m planning on doing my best to keep my dates this Summer.

So, if ya wanna hear an active cancer patient’s art, come to a show & let me sing you some songs. It’s such an alienating thing & the support groups are depressing as shit, so come spend some time with me soon, cause I wanna see you. Thank you so much for all of your support so far. It means so much more than I could ever express. I’m trying my best to make this life count.

Foxlin Sings: “you were the loml” by Martha Sin Del @martha.sin.del

A new album release brings another cover where I take a friend’s song & make it my own.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Martha Sin Del for about a year now & was so astounded when I first heard her music. I have since seen her win crowds over within the first second of playing & it makes me so happy to see people have such a genuine connection to art in real time. The realism and cleverness in her songwriting inspires me & aims true to what I try to bring to the table. She’s a true artist & a damn good songwriter. The kind that breaks hearts with only 2 chords. My cup of tea haha. Keep eyes peeled for another collab! She’s part of the Foxlin universe & isn’t going anywhere just yet.

I love so many of her songs, but since the last album was love themed I figured this was the perfect one to cover. In true fashion, the lyrics & melody struck me & I found a way to Foxlin-ify it. 🦊 😆 It’s a piece that documents the period of time after a breakup where you’re convinced they were the love of your life & you’ll never find another. We all know it’s most likely not true, but it’s a pretty normal mindset to be in post breakup.

A collection of newly written & past written material exploring the theme of love; some more tender than others. It’s a fun one, I think. Folkier than some other stuff. I’ll get back to indie rock soon enough, promise. It was recorded while I recovered from a total hip replacement & two awful colds, but I powered through & made something that’s really special to me & I’m hoping to you as well! It’s the first time I’ve ever been on vinyl so that’s pretty cool 😎 Knocked one off the bucket list there. It may be one of the best album closers I’ve had, in my opinion. The final words contain my new mantra which I believe should be yours as well. It also guest stars two of my very good friends, @martha.sin.del & @heathchurchmusic. I love them so much & am so happy they agreed to be on this release. They’re playing my release shows with me! The first one is tonight in Lawrence at @replay_lounge at 6pm and the KC show is Saturday at @arts_on_broadway at 7pm. Two very special nights for a very special album. A look behind the curtain: Life of chronic illnesses.

I dwell in far more waiting rooms and doctor’s offices than the normal human and have a pretty sweet grippy sock collection. I’m always getting blood tested and bones scanned to check on my quality of life and ride that unknown rollercoaster on a daily basis. I’m sure I’ll live a long enough life, but I’m also sure the cancer will come back bringing with it a whole new and old set of complications again. The looming threat hung above me.

With all that said, it’s never stopped me from making my art. The next album was recorded recovering from a total hip replacement and 2 bouts of a nasty winter cold. Since the first diagnosis, I’ve adopted a “fuck it” mentality to life and made more music on my own than ever before. I have no idea when it’ll stop me, but I’ve chosen to go full speed into this new life and try to do some good in the world for myself and others. I’ve also gotten to knock some items off of an ever-changing bucket list, like touring and being on vinyl. I see a lot of darkness, but I also see so much light. Shout out to all my friends who have supported me and loved me and continue to stick by me. I’ve gone my whole life looking for you and am so glad I finally found you all.

That’s it for 2024! I got a full band, made tons of new friends, got recognized for my art in many cool ways, and got to play some really cool shows for some really awesome people. I spent a lot of the year pushing through some pain, both mental and physical, but I continue to prove to myself that I can bounce back from anything. Seriously, anything. Cancer, decaying and collapsing bones, borderline personality disorder, etc. Never count me out. I’m constantly working and improving who and what I am. This year taught me that I can bite back way harder when life bites me. There was so much rooted childhood trauma I was unaware of and I’m finding out it’s the same for so many people. Change is possible as is growth, don’t forget.

My proudest moment of the year has to be my mental health bash in June. You all really showed up for that one and I am so grateful. I want to help everyone I can and having some counselors there to sign you up for appointments was a really good way to dip my toe into philanthropy. I want to do so much more for people who struggle and relate to my experiences, so keep a lookout next year for more. Therapy is a great start, but you have to put in the work to see the results. Keep working, keep going, it’ll get better, and just know you are not unloveable or unloved.

To everyone who has sent me the most beautiful messages and DMs, thank you. I love hearing that I’ve helped in any way or that what I’m doing is connecting with people on a deep level. It means so much to me that you spend time writing such kind words. ILYSM.

Foxlin Sings, “ All The Wrong Things” by Wes Dorethy

I’m having some fun covering my friends songs. I know some great songwriters and my goal is to highlight their amazing art so you can fall in love with them as well. I love doing covers of people I know personally as it adds to the sentiment of the piece and makes it more special for me, them, and you all.

Longtime Foxlinites may already know Wes from seeing us play live together or hearing his fiddle playing on my album, “Woe Me!”. He’s family to me as are all the other artists I’ve covered so far. I love them all dearly and am constantly blown away by their work.

I got to hear this song before it was released and as soon as I heard it, it blew my mind. I cried and wished I had written it. It seems like something I would write, honestly. Every word hit me hard and the melodies at play slayed me. It was obviously written for a specific time during the start of the Covid pandemic, but still manages to transcend that for me and applies to how I can feel sometimes. It ultimately ends on a hopeful note which I’m learning to try to do. Without hope, things can seem pretty stagnant.

Wes’ version is more raw and acoustic and has gorgeous harmonies from another vocalist. I strongly urge you to listen to the original version as well as the rest of his music. He’s one of my favorite songwriters, one of my favorite musicians, and one of my favorite humans and definitely deserves all the success that comes his way.

Vacationer:
A companion piece to Camper, created in the same sonic spectrum. Traveling will always make me appreciate home and heighten my existentialism. Sometimes the vastness is just so terrifying. Nightmares hit different as well on the road, especially when sleeping in cars in parking lots.

A tad longer than Camper, this one is more technical and thought out, like a vacation, whereas Camper was more raw and natural. The lyrics were mostly taken from my journal as always. They’re standard documentation of my struggles and if you relate to them I urge you to seek help as I do. It’s so important that you understand that I document my worst moments as a means to not let it rot and fester in my head. I was taught to bottle and at some point the bottle broke and I found relief in sharing my battles. Happier lyrics will happen when happier times are presented. That’s just the way it is for me. Life is still throwing so many curveballs my way and I never learned how to play baseball. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I love you all dearly.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who was involved, in any capacity, this past weekend! My first full band shows were a huge success and I’m so ecstatic and proud of everything we have accomplished. We entertained, got people some mental health help, got to see and meet all of you, and show you what a full, fleshed out Foxlin might sound like. We howled, broke strings, raised some money for people struggling, and maybe got a live recording out of it!

First, I want to thank my band. Noah Bartelt, Morgan Rogers, and Aaron Hudspeth. They made this super easy for me while being great humans who made everything so much fun. Second, I want to thank The Rino and minibar and all of their staff. They made us feel so welcome and made my life so much easier. I also want to thank my staff and the therapists that helped make this idea a reality. I have some wild ideas and such a fire for helping people who struggle like I do with mental illness and I was able to successfully pay for two people’s first therapy session with the financial help of all of you kind souls. I plan to do so many more fundraisers like this in the future, so stay tuned. It makes me feel like I’m making a big difference.

Another GIGANTIC thank you to the other bands and acts. I curated an amazing lineup every night and got to share the stage with people I admire and love. Give them a follow and check their schedules and see them live again. You now know how amazing they all are!

Finding a compatible therapist is extremely difficult. You have to go through many channels and you never know if it’ll be a good fit before your first appointment. That’s another reason why I wanted to get 3 different therapists to my show on the 28th at The Rino in North KC. You get an opportunity to feel out a few therapists and see if they’re what you’re looking for. Come to the show, talk to them to see if they can help, and set up an appointment.

I feel a certain responsibility to do all I can to help the people who relate to my experiences and music. I can’t just stand on a stage and tell you the sky is falling without providing a possible solution. Perspective and communication is everything to me and in my opinion, we can’t all just talk about it; action needs to be taken. I seek help and so should you and I think this world can be so much more pleasant if we all reign in our own traumas and struggles and harness our mental health. Fix the light within and watch it shine through, ya know? Think of what we can accomplish if we’ve stifled the monster within. The therapists will also have more resources to help and can talk to you all about prices and insurance.

At my full band show on June 28th at The Rino, I will have a local expressive arts therapy organization who can offer you the best free resources and can schedule you an appointment with them on the spot!
I’m so excited to have this resource available for my fans and friends. Many come to me after my set and tell me how they relate to my work and I always feel so helpless when I can’t do anything for them, but provide websites and phone numbers. I believe therapy is such an amazing tool to not only analyze yourself in a productive way, but analyze the way we see the world around us. Perspective shifting is so important.

Anyway, I’m so honored to have Liberation Through Expressive Arts at The Rino with me. We’ll be raffling of a huge prize pack and doing a couple drawings for some discounted sessions. All the money from the raffle is going to the local organization. Maybe even pay for someone’s first session????

A journey into identity and the monster inside, I delve into questioning my identity as my struggle with BPD goes on. Each track flows into one another to create a sonic experience.
Ushering you in is an intro to set the theme as it explodes into the powerful title track. From there, it gets ethereal and folksy with a back to back waltz adventuring into the religious cry for help and love identities I’ve wrestled with. It all ends with the emotional question that plagues me to put an ambiguous bow on the package. Who Am I?
